Benicàssim in times of war

Description: The outbreak of the Spanish Civil War caused Benicàssim’s elegant summer villas to undergo a radical change of function. Requisitioned and adapted to the needs of the conflict, they became part of a major medical complex linked to the International Brigades, where the Hotel Voramar and dozens of villas were turned into hospitals, accommodation, dining rooms and recovery spaces, casinos for political gatherings, libraries... Doctors, nurses, soldiers, and prominent journalists and writers of different nationalities made Benicàssim an important medical and humanitarian centre during the Civil War.
The visit will conclude with a screening of original footage from Victoire de la vie, a 1937 documentary filmed partly in Benicàssim by the renowned French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson.
